Upcoming Marvel Comics Movies, Part II

Iron Fist

by Mike Thomas

Earlier this week we ran a Good/Bad/Ugly rating of some of the upcoming Marvel Comics movies. Turns out that there are a lot of these movies slated to come out over the next two years, in fact way too many for us to fit into a single article, so we're doing it in two parts. If you missed the first edition, you might want to read it first. If you've already read it, then you're ready for part II.

Daredevil 2: Ben Hoof-Lick (as an old friend calls him) may not sign on to do this sequel to the original Daredevil, so that could be a definite strike against this project. I am not an Affleck fan, but I thought that he did a bang up job in the first installment. Also, I have no idea what villain they could bring in to cause trouble. Who are the Daredevil’s enemies outside of general criminals, Kingpin, and Bullseye? With no Ben Affleck, and no famous villain, this has the potential to be very, very Bad.

Iron Fist: This is an interesting one indeed. . .I think that this rivals Luke Cage in the ‘huh? factor’ as it just sounds so odd, but the Iron Fist has the power to channel his Chi (or life force) into his hand, making his fist into an iron-like weapon. A little screwy, but I feel that this one has potential, especially since Ray Park (who played Darth Maul in Star Wars: Episode 1, and Toad in X-Men) is starring as Iron Fist. We all know how Good he is at martial arts/fight scenes, so this could definitely be a must see.

Man Thing: Who, or what, is Man Thing? He's a half man, half vegetable with no brain, who sweats an acid fluid and has the ability to sense fear and emotions, and who lives in the Florida Everglades. This sounds like one of the men that the Golden Girls would have flipped over.
Man Thing is one of those Marvel characters that make you go Hmmm. Apparently, when he senses fear, he grabs that fearful person, and blows them up. Somehow, good people are not afraid of this hideous thing, and he only kills Bad guys. What an awful idea for a movie.

Magneto: Am I the only one who thinks that Ian McKellen only took the role of Magneto in the X-Men movies so that he could run around as a purple helmeted warrior? The story in this X-Men spin-off takes place during WWII when Magneto was apparently a young prisoner in a concentration camp, and Charles Xavier was a young walking liberating soldier, hence their first meeting, and beginning of the X-Men stories. I heard that McKellen wanted to turn it into a romantic love at first sight story which would just be Ugly!

Spiderman 3: Like the X-Men movie discussed in the first part of this rating, the plot is still a mystery. Unlike DD2 though, there are many fantastic villains they could bring into play for this movie. Harry Osborne as the Green Goblin, The Rhino, Scorpion, The Vulture, Electro, Mysterio, Venom, and Carnage would all make Good villains for Spidey to fight. We can only hope that they bump the storyline ahead a few years to facilitate the addition of a few baddies and a lot more action.

Wolverine: Wow. This could be cool. Sabertooth I think bit the bullet, and Lady Deathstrike is dead so they most likely will not be making reappearance any time soon. What would be nice to see is the producers picking up on the Weapon X line, and including the Deadpool character villain (also a Weapon X project with Wolverine and Sabertooth) and even throwing in (I can only dream) Omega Red (a Soviet Super Soldier. . .Russia’s version of the Canadian Weapon X Project). No matter what villains they bring in, I am sure that; like Spiderman 3, this will be a really Good movie!
