This week there isn't a particularly consistent theme, but I am doing
a couple of items based around one movie. If anyone has any suggestions
for themes, or links, or whatever, e-mail me or better yet, hit the forum.
Song of the Week: This song is recent and
a reasonably big hit, although from a fairly new and emerging band. The
song is "Astounded" by Bran Van 3000.
I can't really classify this, but I really like it. And the Bran Van is
from Montreal, and it's fitting that I feature a Canadian band on Canada
Day, even if the aforementioned Canadian band is on US label.
Link of the Week: Say perhaps you want
to find out more information on Bran Van 3000. Where would you go to find
this information? The answer is the All Music Guide, located at www.allmusic.com.
A great resource for information on all things musical.
Quote of the Week: "How do you shoot
the devil in the back? What if you miss?" — Verbal Kint in
The Usual Suspects. This naturally leads me to the. . .
DVD of the Week: In case you haven't guessed,
the DVD of the week is The Usual Suspects. If
you haven't seen this brilliant film, well, I'm not going to recommend
you run out and watch it, because this movie will disturb a lot of people.
The violence is considerable, and the strong language is ubiquitous. That
aside, this is an amazing film. It was only nominated for two Academy
Awards (and won both, I should add), which is a bit of a surprise, considering
Babe, Apollo 13, and Sense and Sensibility
were nominated for Best Picture in the same year. So, if you aren't easily
offended, and are up for a cinematic near-masterpiece, check out The
Usual Suspects. It's a movie you'll have to watch more than once.
