How People Find This Site

The next über search engine

by Marko Peric

When one runs a website, one has access to a variety of statistics. Anyone who has ever run a site is doubtless familiar with the various info that can be easily obtained. The stats people tend to be most concerned about are page views and unique visitors, which are measures of how many people viewed the site and how many pages they looked at. After that, the info I find most interesting are the search terms used to find dontmindme.com. Going hand in hand with these terms is the placement on the search engines related to said terms. I'm going to review some of this for you now. I should point out that placement on search engines can change very quickly, so what I'm saying now could well have changed. If you want to see where I stand right now, just click on the links below to see the search results.

This is one I'm particularly pleased with, and one that I think I deserve. I've done two separate G/B/U ratings of breakfast cereal mascots, so it's a good thing that I'm at both #2 and #3 on Google.com for that search term.

Now this is another one that I'm proud of. I've only used this phrase once on the site, but I'm #1 on Google for nicky nicky nine doors. How cool is that? Mind you, it would be a lot cooler if more people searched for nicky nicky nine doors more often.

I was surprised to find myself at #8 on Yahoo for Canyonaro. I was very surprised to find that I'm even ahead of thesimpsons.net, which is only at #11.

This one isn't quite as impressive as a #8 on Yahoo for canyonaro, but probably far useful. I imagine more people search for movie villain than for giant fictional SUVs from The Simpsons. Good thing I'm on the second page of results on Google.

This is one I'm rather ambivalent about. On the one hand, I'm kinda glad that I'm at #3 on Google.de (German Google) for Marylin Manson real names. On the other, I realize now that I have Marilyn misspelled. Oh well.

Now this one stuck out like a sore thumb because it's the only search to land a hit on my site in the last two weeks from Lycos. Also it's been a while, almost a year in fact, since I wrote about human cryogenics. Cool that I'm at #11.

Another well deserved placement, IMHO, is my #1 ranking on Google for long movie titles. Guess I should hurry up and post a more long movie titles feature to hopefullygrab the #2 spot too.

Mean Practical Jokes. Now, I've never posted anything specifically about mean practical jokes, but maybe I should, because I'm currently listed at #20 on Yahoo.com for this search term.

Also on the topic of practical jokes, a search for simple practical jokes finds me at #7 on Google.com, which is not a bad place to be. I wonder if more people look for mean practical jokes versus simple ones?

Now this one is a bit odd. Searching for Arabian blend coffee on Yahoo.com nets a lot of results, and I'm nowhere near the top. But throw some quotes around it and search for "Arabian blend coffee" and low and behold, I'm #1. Not only that, but I'm the only site to come up. Guess this is what I get for making a beverage comment in the middle of a rant about the September 11 tragedy.

Last but not least I leave you with one of the oddest and most specific search results I've seen reach my site. I don't suppose all that mean people search for Walt Disney's cryogenically frozen head, but if they search for iton Google, they'll find me at #4. I'm not sure what's more troubling, though -- that I'm so high on this list, or that there are six pages of results for the search.
