Wilhelm Award Nominations (September 2007)

Some awards announce all their nominees at some predetermined date not long before the actual winners are announced. Here at Dontmindme.com we do things a little differently. At random times throughout the year we announce nominations for various categories of awards. This is one of those times.

If you'd like to learn more about the Wilhelms, visit the Wilhelm Awards Page. There you can find out the explanation behind the name, listen to the actual Wilhelm scream, and learn about previous winners and nominees. But for now, on with the nominations.

Best New Webcomic: To say that there are a lot of webcomics out there is an understatement if there ever was one. And while many are generally quite terrible, if you happen to have a good one, getting it noticed amidst all the dreck isn't exactly easy. So having your comic hosted on a website which already happens to host a popular comic and which would appeal to a similar audience would be a no brainer. Such a comic is Erfworld. The popular and long running gaming comic Order of the Stick updates three times most weeks, and Erfworld generally updates on two of the other days.
So what is Erfworld? Imagine a world that runs as a turn-based strategy game. Into this world a pudgy Kinko's employee who is obsessed with gaming is summoned by a desperate overlord who has been almost overrun by his enemies. Okay, so it may sound a little cheesy, but the storyline is engrossing, the balance between drama and humour is solid, and the artwork nothing short of astounding. Erfworld is now nominated for the Wilhelm for Best New Webcomic.

Worst Song Cover: Emerging artists can often find, or expand, their audience by performing covers of well known songs from decades gone by. And while this can work, it can also produce terrible, terrible, results. Such was the cover of "Good Morning Starshine" by Serena Ryder. While Ms. Ryder may well have achieved the coveted status of so hot right now, this is a truly awful song. While it might be senimentally popular, just look at these lyrics: Gliddy glub gloopy/ Nibby nabby noopy / La la la lo lo / Sabba sibby sabba / Nooby abba nabba / Le le lo lo / Tooby ooby walla / Nooby abba naba / Early morning singing song. Those are the real lyrics, look it up if you don't believe me. Anything that includes that many made up nonsense words but yet has nothing to do with the Teletubbies should not be covered by anyone with pretensions of ever being taken seriously. "Good Morning Starshine" by Serena Ryder is a strong contender for the Wilhelm for Worst Song Cover.

Most enjoyable game: As regular readers of this site may know, I really like Risk. The boardgame, that is, not the taking of unwise chances. So a game that is similar to Risk in that it involves conquering territories with matched dice rolls would be right up my alley. Last year I found an online game of that sort, Dicewars, which was fairly fun, but I once I learned a few tricks of how to win it stopped being much of a challenge. But when I decided to play it a few days ago, and googled Dicewars, I found something else — an online multiplayer version. What more, it has a fairly active community of players, a ranking system, and live chat during games (ideal both for taunting opponents and making deals with potential allies). It's called Kdice, and it's entirely too much fun. A word of warning, however; it's wildly addictive. I had to pull myself away from the game just to write this. It is a strong contender for the Wilhelm for Most Enjoyable Game.
